What is true manhood and womanhood?

I'm in the process of putting together a paper for class.  No, this is not a ploy to have you write my paper.  But as you know I often write to think so here we go again...  In my paper I'm asked to find a clear statement by evangelical Christians who hold to an egalitarian view of marital roles (husban and wife as equal in their authority and roles).  Write a 4 page paper explaining their view and critique it using a biblical argument.  Be sure to footnote and list your sources in this paper.

So in hopes of finding some sources I jumped on Google and went to town.  The list here is what I found that interested me from "both sides of the fence" so to speak.  The first 5 are written from the egalitarian perspective and most of them were taken from the website "Christians for Biblical Equality" one of the main leaders of the egalitarian perspective.  The next 5 are written from the complementary perspective and most of them were taken from the website "The Council on Biblical Manhood and Womanhood".

  1. Chain of Command or Mutual Submission: Evangelicals Dispute Family Models by Sandra Cook-Dufield
  2. The Biblical Basis for Women's Service in the Church by N.T. Wright
  3. The Bible and Gender Equality by Rebecca Merrill Groothuis
  4. An examination of the seven pillars upon which the case for permanent subordination of women stands by Kevin Giles
  5. Affirming and Celebrating the Gift of Gender by Jean Bearden and Lorie Schleck
  6. Summaries of the Egalitarian and Complementarian Positions on the Role of Women in the Home and in Christian Ministry by Bruce A. Ware
  7. A Female Apostle? by David Jones
  8. The Myth of Mutual Submission as an Interpretation of Ephesians 5:21 by Wayne Grudem
  9. Does Head Mean "Source" or "Authority Over" in Greek Literature: A Survey or 2336 Examples by Wayne Grudem
  10. Able to Teach and Complementarian? by Kim Pennington

I'm in the processing these articles and putting together a 4 page paper... no easy task for me... for my Marriage and Family Counseling class.  I've got just 2 classes and a thesis left to finish my masters... the road is long but I think there will be light around this next bend.

By the way I started a wordpress and a facebook if anyone is interested.

"equal in their authority and roles"

The biblical critique of this view should be fairly straightforward. Biblically, the authority of a husband is not equal to the authority of a wife, any more than the authority of a captain is equal to that of a lieutenant. That does not diminish the wife's authority (she does have her own), but the wife is to be led by and subject to the authority of her husband. Similarly, the husband and wife have different roles to play in the marriage, in the parenting process, and in the community.

The husband is head of the wife, just as Christ is head of the church. Interestingly, that puts the heavier burden on the HUSBAND, when you consider what Christ did (and does) for the church.

This is an interesting subject and now that I'm a married man it intrigues me on another level. We understand our roles as the are biblically mandated but seeing the roles function in our day to day lives is of course a different challenge. How do our roles and man and woman effectively play out as we interact in every moment every day as a husband and wife?

I can't wait to see your thesis and what you come up with in your searching.

On a separate note. I miss you and hope you're doing well. Even from GA To OH our hearts are with you and I hope you're doing well. Send out a little newsletter or something when get some time so we can know what's happenin' with the Christensen folk.

Also, I'd love for you to keep checkin' in on my new blog and leave some posts. http://chosensample.com

Take care, man. Love ya! Jaq Baldwin

Wow! I am so grateful that you did a stopby on my site and led me to yours. This subject is one I too have been studying. My first venture into this area was in a series labelled in my tags as "A Pause for a Cause." I was not, at that time, even aware that there was an egaltarian movement, or any of these groups you mentioned. Therefore, I am thankful to have seen this, because God has taken me another direction on this subject in my current study on Isaiah, and I think the direction and information He's showing me explains the reason for this whole controversy in the church. So I am in the midst of that study, and starting to post what God is revealing to me on the matter, and you, by posting this info and link, have helped me in that process greatly. Now I can add this to what I already have, and expound on the matter in a more full and complete way. Truely appreciated. Peace and blessings.

Hello JC,
You made your site so simple yet elegant but I see that you don’t write here much anymore!
I want to help people to really get to know God, especially in these troubled times. I have an important message for everyone from the Bible: "The land is swollen with murder. The city is bloated with injustice. They all say, 'God has forsaken the country. He doesn't see anything we do.' Well, I do see, and I'm not feeling sorry for any of them. They're going to pay for what they've done." (Ezekiel 9:9-10) (The Message)
